Last night’s show was somewhat of a disappointment to me, I expected all of the contestants to really bring it up a notch and though some remained consistent, others just left me shaking my head. It was a strange night of people forgetting their words (I’m sure due to nerves but that is no excuse), and people putting their on spin on a Diana Ross song (arrangement wise) that should have been left alone. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!! Overall, it was the women who reigned supreme. Diana Ross of course gave tips to all of the contestants individually and hopefully last night she wasn’t cringing during some of her songs.
Without further adieu, here’s how the night went:
Brandon Rogers: He sang “You Can’t Hurry Love”. Oh boy, what a way to start the night. Midway through the song he forgot the words. I couldn’t believe it. It had to be hard to be the first one up but come on - Brandon, you definitely can do better than this and I was soo unimpressed by his performance. Unfortunately after this, he will probably forever remain a backup singer. Oy. Simon said that it was a complete letdown and it certainly was. Hopefully though he will be back next week.
Melinda Doolittle: She sang “Home”. Damn near perfect. I think the only thing she needs to work on, again, get rid of the meekness. Girl, you are a Diva now so own it. You’re not a background singer anymore baby!! Paula was blubbering like a fool and Simon likened her to a young Gladys Knight. He told her, “You made a boring song fantastic.” Woo hoo Mindy Doo…you’ve got a long 3 months ahead of you
Chris Sligh: He sang “Endless Love”. Oy, first of all - he came out on stage sans glasses. I did not like the look at all. Put the glasses back on next week (Simon said so himself). Okay, I hated his performance. He did his own arrangement of Endless Love and it was god awful. It was pitchy (although who really knows if he was pitchy or not, the arrangement made this song unrecognizable). The judges pretty much thought it was a mess.
Gina Glocksen: She sang “Love Child”. I thought overall it was pretty good. Randy thought that it was pitchy and there was no excitement, Paula said, “You’re much better than what you did”, and Simon said that she chose the right song, but it was only a “middle of the pack” performance.
Sanjaya Malakar: He sang “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” . First of all, when he came out, to me he looked like a drag queen. He changed up his hairstyle - curlier than before (I swear those AI stylists used a curling iron on him), and his performance was worse. I swear if he goes through again this week I’m going to scream. Obviously the judges thought it was bad too - although Randy did like his hair - he thought it was rockin’. Simon said that once Diana listens to this version she’s going to scream.
Haley Scarnato: She sang “Missing You”. The beginning started out rough and here’s another person who forgot their words. It was okay. Randy thought it was pitchy, Paula thought the same, and Simon surprised everyone by saying that he didn’t think it was all that bad and actually told her that she has a “real presence” on stage. He knew that the nerves got the best of her but he was impressed with how she looked up there. He thinks she’s going to do better than he thought. Hmmmm, interesting.
Phil Stacey: He sang “Make You Love Me”. I thought he was pretty good. Out of the guys who went before him, he was definitely the best. Randy agreed, “You’re the vocal of the night for the boys”. Simon said that it was okay and that he has a tendency to shout, wasn’t outstanding but pretty good.
Lakisha “Kiki” Jones: She sang “God Bless The Child”. One word. AWESOME. She is a born performer. She can command the stage with such ease. She looked gorgeous too. Just loved loved loved her last night. The judges gave her high praises as well. Randy said it was the perfect song choice for her, unbelievable vocal, Paula said she is a beautiful performer, her heart really comes through when she sings, and Simon said “You’ve either got it or you don’t and you’ve got it”. He said Kiki and Mindy are in a different league than everyone else. Amen to that.
Blake Lewis: He sang “You Keep Me Hanging On”. He did his own spin on this song, kind of brought this song into 2007 and I really liked it. I would buy his version of it for sure. Unfortunately the judges didn’t feel the same way as I did. They basically didn’t like it at all and Simon said “I didn’t get that”. I was very surprised that across the board the judges didn’t like it. I think they’re wrong and I don’t think he’s in any danger of being voted off this week so no biggie.
Stephanie Edwards: She sang “Love Hangover”. I don’t know, the song just wasn’t doing anything for me. I mean, she has great vocals and everything but I was bored with her performance. Randy said that she forgot her words but heh heh she pulled it off because I didn’t even catch that. The judges weren’t that impressed either.
Chris Richardson: He sang “The Boss”. I thought he did great. He worked the crowd…jumping up on that little mini stage behind the judges even. He’s one of my favorite boys - I think he’ll make the Top 5. The judges were so so…Randy thought that he overdid it a little bit and Simon thought that it was dreadful and terrible. Hmmm. Have to disagree with you on that one.
Jordin Sparks: She sang “If We Hold On Together”. Oh my goodness, they saved the BEST for last. I’m not just saying that because she’s from my town but seriously..she was incredible last night. She really brought it last night and I think she wanted to show the world that she can be up there and be compared to Lakisha and Mindy no problem. Well, she proved that last night. Randy said that he is so impressed with her, especially since she is only 17. With her performance he’s calling it a 3 girl race now. Woo hoo!! Paula said that she has a natural gift and is a breath of fresh air. Simon said that it was a little bit gooey but it was a very very good vocal. He said, “that just put yourself in the finals”.
So tonight’s show should prove interesting. Of course I feel that Sanjaya should get the boot but who knows. Anything can happen with this show. Oy, and let’s not foget, we’re going to have to sit through all of the contestants singing a la Brady Bunch style as the “Silver Platters” again…..Of course I’m sure it’s going to be all Diana Ross songs.
