Phoenix Helicopter Crash

helicopter crash

It has been a very somber afternoon here in the Valley of the Sun. I was watching “All My Children” when a Breaking News Report interrupted the show. The police were chasing a vehicle and the ABC news affiliate, KNXV Channel 15 was filming the chase. I was watching the chase in progress and then all of a sudden you could hear the pilot/reporter yell and it looked as if the camera was swirling around, then it went to a blank screen. They immediately cut back to the anchor who looked confused just as I was. I switched channels to see if anyone else was covering it and much to my shock you can see this other station who was filming the chase quickly pan over to an area that was just a cloud of black smoke. The ABC KNXV helicopter collided with another news helicopter from independent news station KTVK Channel 3 (who was also filming the chase). I have never been so shaken by something on TV in my life. I felt like I was watching something from a movie. All of this because an idiot took off after police pulled him over. That’s how the chase started. Unbelievable. I hope this guy spends the rest of his life behind bars.

KTVK Pilot Jim Bowerbank and photographer Jim Cox as well as KNXV Pilot Craig Smith and photographer Rich Krolak were killed. My condolences go out to all of their families. Just a senseless tragedy that did not have to happen.

This is so sad!! It made an article in the Ohio newspaper. I feel terrible to the families of the pilots and photographers.

This didn’t happen “because an idiot took off after police pulled him over,” it happened because 2 helicopterpilots were so selfish that THEY wanted to get the “best shot of the scene” and didn’t bother to look around them.

The guy in the chase was an idiot for sure, but don’t blame him for our out of control media who force-feeds us car chases, or for careless pilots. We are damned lucky the choppers fell into an empty field and not ontop of a daycare or school.

No condolences from me, just questions:
why do 3 helicopters have to chase some stupid pickpocket?
what would happen if this happens every day - more helicopters in the air?
how many criminals do you need to arrange a hexagon crash?
how stupid can people be to think that news helicopters contribute to their education/gain of information?

helicopter crashs are good for the helicopter industry…
