Actor Roy Scheider, widely known as the police chief in the blockbuster 1975 movie Jaws, died earlier today. He was 75 years old.
He died at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences hospital in Little Rock. His cause of death is unknown. However, a hospital spokeswoman said that he had been treated for multiple myeloma for the last two years.
His first foray into acting was back in 1961 in the role of Mercutio in a New York Shakespeare Festival production of Romeo and Juliet. He received an Oscar nomination for his role in The French Connection, and in 1979, received his second nom for his role in All That Jazz.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda Seimer, three children, and two grandchildren.
